The Sea of Cortez

Adventure Awaits

Sailing the Sea of Cortez along Southern Baja is a journey into the extraordinary — serene, otherworldly, and alive with natural wonder. This is a place where desert landscapes meet turquoise seas, where wildlife thrives, and where you can drop anchor in solitude beneath a blanket of stars. Discover beloved destinations such as Bahía Balandra, with its tranquil waters; Agua Verde, for a sheltered cove with ample amenities; and the islands north of La Paz, including Isla San Francisco, famous for its perfect crescent bay, and the UNESCO-protected Isla Espíritu Santo and Isla Partida, uninhabited sanctuaries.

What to Expect

Marine Life

The Sea of Cortez teems with life. Encounter playful sea lions, pods of dolphins, majestic whales and a kaleidoscope of tropical fish. This is one of the few places on earth where you can swim alongside a colony of California sea lions and massive whale sharks in their natural habitat. With nearly 1,000 fish species, 5,000 invertebrates, and 36 types of marine mammals, every journey reveals something new.

Scenery

Prepare for visual poetry — the meeting of red desert cliffs and shimmering blue waters. Each island feels untouched, a world apart. When night falls, the experience deepens: with no city lights to dim the view, the Milky Way blazes across the sky, and the sea itself sometimes glows with bioluminescence.

Activities

Adventure here is as varied as the landscape. Sail, snorkel, SCUBA dive, hike remote trails, or cast a line and catch your dinner. Every day offers a new way to explore — above and below the surface.

Seafood

The Sea of Cortez is a paradise for seafood lovers. Fresh yellowtail, mahi-mahi, flounder, wild blue shrimp, chocolate clams, and bay scallops are just a few of the local delicacies you might savor — often caught the same day and prepared on board.

Why Sail with Us

Your SCA crew has spent over 20 years navigating these waters — charting hidden coves, connecting with local communities, and uncovering the true spirit of Baja. Depending on your appetite for adventure, we can take you beyond the guidebooks — hiking to 8,000-year-old cave paintings, exploring abandoned saltworks, and sharing a fish taco feast on an island home to just 26 residents.

Now is the moment to immerse yourself in the “Aquarium of the World.” Experience the magic, lore, and living beauty of this unspoiled paradise — the Sea of Cortez.

The Sea of Cortez is wonderful year-round. Fall and late spring bring calm, warm days. Winter has cooler “Norte” winds (your captain knows the best routes). Summer means warm water and epic snorkeling, while winter offers crystal-clear visibility and migrating wildlife.

Expect around 64–72°F (18–22°C) in winter and 80–86°F (27–30°C) in summer. In summer, a rash-guard is usually enough; in winter, many guests prefer a shorty or light full wetsuit.
